Well, my opinion on this is that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has probarbly just used doom 3, and hamy half life 2, and maybe other games, as examples of work they would like to re-create.

And then if they did, or if they took the game's files and edited them a little bit, and it looks good, why complain about it.

Sure it's cooler and harder to make everything yourself, but why re-make something instead of using what's out there, since you want it to look like that anyway.

Ofcourse this doesn't clear up the fact that the material is not allowed to sell, but I'm pretty confident that they'll have some kind of deal going, if you're posting extracting tools and planning to let modders have a bang at your game you'd be a right idiot to leave in material that's illigal right? :)

Anyways, wonder what the outcome of this find will be :)

Well, it's best not to assume anything. The fact it was a commercial game didn't stop Rockstar leaving that sex game shit in San Andreas, and even Crytek was raided once for having illegal copies of 3D Studio Max or some crap if I recall correctly.

It might not make sense so much to make similar things twice, but how can innovation ever occur if developers just look at previous games and say "I want something like that" and just buy the content? Lots of innovation comes through experimentation and perhaps trying to recreate something else but ending up with something new and awesome. How can that happen if content is just nabbed?

Obviously it'd need to be a lot worse than some shit water/light maps to really matter, but the general notion of taking/buying content from other games is to be discouraged whenever possible in my opinion.

It doesnt just happen with content, it also happens with the actual features and ideas and thats a lot and a lot worse imo. A lot of companies copy other games way too much. Playing similar games for inspiriation is fine but its a different world when every feature and thing has to be inspired by the other game, "they start their game like that too and since their game is good that means such a start is good!!!11" - "they got such a door too so we need that too!". Cant you figure it out on your own what kind of door you need?

Why cant developers design stuff on their own, and then play the other game later on to see how it can improve their own game, complement their own ideas and design rather than having it shape their entire concept and idea.

Content in the end is still just a tool. Its not about what it is, its about what you do with it. I dont care seeing the same crate or wall texture in 20 different games, as long as they do something cool with it. Legal issues aside.

i REALLY HOPE this is a huge scandal in the brewing and not just a "yet" unknown texture package that a couple of big studios boughed in parallel :D

Nope.
Crytek was raided because a neighbor saw a people in the Crytek's office with a (fake) AK47 in hand. The police was called and took an investigation. It has nothing to do with illegal copy of anything. There is no crap here, just some paranoid people.

By the way: hello to everyone ;)

Bullshit - that story was acony. Acony produces Parabellum on UE3 and is also in Germany but in the southernpart near the blackwoodforrest (schwarzwald) and crytek is in frankfurt at main (Frankfurt am Main).

Infact Crytek had legal issues because of unlicensed versions or at least investigations took place but if i remember correctly this was back in the days than they were settled in coburg and it was a bad joke by a former interner.

Yeah, I wasn't talking about a recent thing. Whether or not they were cleared doesn't change the fact that they were in hot water because of it. That wasn't really my main point though; I just tacked that on to slightly bolster my comment about commercial businesses/games/etc not necessary being completely legit, having read about the Crytek licence issues years ago.

Incidentally, even if Crytek didn't do it I bet I wouldn't be wrong if I were to wager that at least one (small) developer with an employee on Mapcore uses dodgy software. Not that they'll admit it.

But again we're deviating from the main subject, which is that nicking those textures was wrong and there probably wasn't a deal to just take them after all.

A very candid question:
Is it possible these textures were open source thus usable freely by everyone ?
The fact they were in Doom3 doesn't mean they've been created by ID, does it ?

It would be and that was my initial assumption, but as posted earlier in the thread they used the Doom 3-specific file names (eg: use of the word "Imp", the infamous Doom 3 enemy) indicating that they definitely came from the game itself.

those arnt the kind of textures you find for free online they are way to specific ! but still it could be a commercial game texture package i REALLY REALLY doubt that though

the ID artists they do that shit them selfs believe me !
