Hopefully this mean that all the maps that do get into NS2 will be really high quality because it will effectively be a competition to get your map in.

Everybody seem to think of this as a new interesting idea, but as far as I can tell it's the exact same way they did it with Counter-Strike.

Yeah, it is. Similar with DoD, I think. Only difference is they'd already released and Valve was just paying for the content that was included at the time.

...which re-emphasizes that it's a proven model. :)

This tactic also ensure them a lot of rejected maps that will be available on release time as unofficial stuff.
