That orange color is a little to strong I think..

I think you used the sharpen filter too much as they all seem too grainy to me. Your bevels/edges are too clean and straight.

I think he just "copied" the sizes from the originals (they're not powers of 2 either), as that's easier to work. They're not meant to be used in a map anyway (correct me if I'm wrong), so it doesn't really matter.
Other than that, looking good! I agree the organe is a tad too strong.

About the power of 2 thingie... I just took the sizes of the default textures and resized the largest side to 512 :/ Thanks for the comments

Delaz if you could post a few various HL base textures for us to start with that'd be brilliant - as some of us haven't had it installed for years now.

Those look pretty good. I think the teal lab-wall textures are probably too concrete / dirty though to be used in a hi-tech laboratory, especially considering how it is used at the beginning of Half-Life.
